Seeing the Big Picture of life - ALL OF LIFE - is essential in making sense of our individual lives and the things that are happening, and have happened, in them. Understanding that there is a Big Picture can help us to let go of feeling like a victim and instead see the value in every experience as an opportunity for soul growth, whether or not it feels like it at the time.
If you subscribe to the notion of reincarnation, you would likely understand iot to mean that you come back time and time again to live many different lives, with many different experiences, in many different bodies. Seeing where you are currently in your life can, not surprisingly, provide enormous clues as to what you chose to experience in this life. Having such insights can help you to step up to meet such experiences, particularly the more unpleasant or challenging ones, as an explorer looking to overcome them, rather than as a victim desperately trying to survive them.
What is the difference, and why does it matter? If you look at a specific life as consisting of a set of experiences that you had mapped out for you (possibly by yourself - your soul). Why would you do such a thing? My belief is that it is so that you can experience all sides of life - the good, the bad and the ugly - in order to really know life. Experiencing "bad" things is not a punishment. It is simply an experience.
